Starir Flyfishing club’s guiding principle is that salmon rivers can only be preserved through responsible use and a long-term outlook. The protection of wild Atlantic salmon, together with respect for angling tradition and the natural environment, is integral to how Starir manages and looks after its rivers.
Starir took over the lease of the Þverá/Kjarrá system in 2013. That summer, more than 3,000 salmon were landed, reinforcing the premier status of a river already regarded as one of Iceland’s finest. Þverá/Kjarrá is famed for its consistent fishing, the variety of its fly water and its breath-taking scenery.
Víðidalsá in Northwest Iceland joined Starir in 2014. One of Iceland’s great big-salmon rivers, it offers a mix of classic holding pools, long runs and powerful water that consistently produces large fish. That year, two productive junction fisheries were also added: Brenna and Straumar in Borgarfjörður, both ideal for smaller groups seeking variety and plentiful action.
In 2020, three renowned beats on the legendary river Sog joined the Starir portfolio: Bíldsfell, Torfastaðir and Álftver, adding another dimension to the fishing available. Flókadalsá followed in 2025, a peaceful and very private 3-rod river, known for its consistent catches and rewarding fishing.
Collaboration with local landowners, guides, and riverkeepers has always been central to the management of Starir’s waters. The knowledge and experience of people who have lived and worked alongside these rivers for generations forms the foundation of the way they are run today. This practical knowledge includes the understanding of water levels, fish movement, seasonal changes, and of the subtle character of each river.
Respect for heritage influences not only how the waters are cared for, but also how they are fished. Our aim has always been to preserve the natural balance of the rivers, at the same time offering a thoughtful and authentic angling experience. This tradition of stewardship continues to guide the way we work on the rivers today, helping to ensure that wild Atlantic salmon return, season after season.
